Mass drug administration for eye disease prevention

What MDA means
MDA distributes safe, single-dose medicines to eligible people in districts where a neglected tropical disease is still spreading. Trained community health workers record coverage and repeat rounds until transmission falls below WHO thresholds.
Programmes linked to eye health
Two major examples affect sight:
- Trachoma — repeated azithromycin rounds in endemic districts, part of the SAFE strategy with surgery and hygiene
- Onchocerciasis — community ivermectin (Mectizan) near rivers where black flies spread infection
- Lymphatic filariasis — annual albendazole-based combinations in overlapping tropical regions
Who should take part
National programmes define age limits and exclusions, such as pregnancy, very young infants, or certain other illnesses. Residents in endemic districts are encouraged to participate when offered through official campaigns. Travellers are not routinely treated unless living long-term in programme areas.
What MDA is not
MDA is not a licence to use antibiotic eye drops at home for a red eye, or to import ivermectin without medical supervision. Individual pink eye still needs clinical assessment. Public health rounds and personal prescribing serve different purposes.

Frequently asked questions
Is mass drug administration safe?
WHO-backed programmes use medicines and dosing reviewed for large-scale use. Side effects are monitored, and some groups are excluded. Participate only through official local campaigns.
How does MDA prevent blindness?
By killing or clearing parasites and bacteria before they scar eyelids or corneas. Combined with surgery for in-turned lashes and fly control, MDA has greatly reduced trachoma and river blindness in many countries.
Do I need MDA if I live in the UK or US?
Routine MDA for these diseases targets endemic districts abroad. If you live in a high-income country, you are unlikely to be offered MDA unless you reside in a remaining endemic focus.
